BEHIND THE SCENES

VIVA ESPANA

Veronica talks about the difference between Brussels and Sitges.

STORY

&ME THE STORY

Every month the European Parliament moves from Brussels to its seat in Strasbourg. A week later everything is moved back again. The unconventional love story &ME takes place against this desperate attempt to maintain European idealism and unity.

&ME tells the story of Eduard, a gay and disillusioned bureaucrat, who leaves Berlin for Brussels to take up a post within the European Parliament. There he meets the beautiful and idealistic young lawyer Edurne, from Spain, who has finally escaped the clutches of her over-protective mother. Edurne falls madly for Eduard, a handsome, sophisticated man that she can show off to the world. And Eduard is happy to go along with the situation, surprised at the level of affection he feels for this young woman. He might even call it love, because love - c'est bizarre.

But then the attractive Richard comes on the scene, and is soon to be the focus of both Eduard and Edurne's attention. Will Richard turn out to be the glue that holds them together - or the wedge that drives them apart? And can they all, in the process, discover that elusive thing called happiness?

The &ME screenplay is based on the novel "Fremdkörper" by bestseller author Oscar van den Boogaard. His books are sold and translated in The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, the UK, the US and Canada.

NOVEL

OSCAR VAN DEN BOOGAARD - AUTHOR

© Tim Mintiens

Oscar van den Boogaard (1964) made his literary debut in 1990 with Dentz, followed by Fremdkörper (1991) and Bruno's Optimism (1993). Since the publication in 1995 of his great novel Julia's Delight (nominated for The Golden Owl, The ECI Prize and the Libris Literature Prize), Oscar van den Boogaard (1964), has been considered to be one of the finest literary talents in the Dutch-speaking world.

After Julia's Delight Oscar van den Boogaard published Love's Death (1997, nominated for The Golden Owl and the AKO Literature Prize), A Bed Full of Foam (2002), The Vertical Beach (2005), Magic Man (2007) and More Than a Lover (2010).

The light tone of his work is often praised, together with the supple, associative language, rich in imagery and the astounding composition. These qualities are to be found in all Van den Boogaard's books. They are studies in passion and longing such as Dutch literature has rarely produced.

His work has been translated into any number of languages. His most recent novel The Tender Indifferent, will be published in 2013. In that year the movie &ME will be launched, based upon his novel Fremkörper.
